After over 15 years in the publishing world, I have designed and art directed book covers in every genre, for publishers big and small. For the past 10 years I have been the Creative Director of Orbit Books, the science fiction and fantasy division of Hachette Books.
Drawn + Drafted
I am one of the founding members of this top secret consortium of professional Art Directors, who have banded together to make the freelance art world a better place. Our educational wing provides art business education for artists, while our project wing offers freelance art direction for clients not large enough to have a permanent A.D. on staff.
Make Your Art Work
After 3 years of Drawn + Drafted holding Art Business Bootcamp seminars live at conventions, we built Make Your Art Work to allow everyone to access them via the web. We have since expanded beyond our original Bootcamps to also include Intensives given by experts in many creative fields.
Dear Art Director
A tumblr where artists can ask art biz questions anonymously, and get real honest answers (and relevant funny gifs) by the Secret Agent Art Directors of Drawn + Drafted.
Every Day Original
Every Day Original is a collaboration between Drawn + Drafted and our favorite artists. We help our artists post and sell original works directly to their fans. We make it possible for everyone to be an art collector. You don’t need tons of wall space, and you don’t need tons of money.
Muddy Colors is a popular blog for Illustrators by Illustrators, founded by Dan Dos Santos, where I have been writing a column from the Art Director's Point of View for over 4 years.
Logos and Branding
Although most of my professional career has been spent designing book covers, I have found many chances to work on Branding systems for various creative companies and projects.
Scotch & Serif
A home for the projects that combine my love and nerd-level interest in the cocktail world with my experience in design.
Invites and Events
Design for events, especially weddings.
Drinklings is a semi-regular gathering of Science Fiction & Fantasy publishing professionals for drinks, casual conversation, and the occasional good deed. I am a founder with Peter V. Brett, Myke Cole, Jay Franco, and Nancy Lambert.
Women of Wonder
Women of Wonder is a book celebrating the contributions of women artists in the field of fantastic art. It was edited by Cathy Fenner, and I was honored to be asked to write the introduction to the book.
Point of Vision
In 2016, the Society of Illustrators in New York held the first exhibition of women artists is Science Fiction and Fantasy. Irene Gallo of Tor Books and I co-curated the exhibit with the Society.
Drawn + Drafted was honored to take over the annual MicroVisions Exhibit at the Society of Illustrators. In honor of the many years that Irene Gallo, Gregory Manchess, and Dan Dos Santos organized the show, we have retired the name MicroVisions, and have renamed the show Visionarium. The show benefits the Society of Illustrators Student Scholarship fund.
I guest curated a show and panel lecture at Krab Jab gallery in Seattle in 2016. That show grew into my "dream team" of illustrators creating book covers for their favorite books.
NYU Center for Publishing
For the past 4 years I have been teaching a class on Design for Publishing for graduate students at the NYU Center for Publishing.
Occasionally I will write for other sites and books, links below:
I have been keeping books continuously since I was 15 years old. They are a mix of sketchbook, journal, scrapbook, notebook, and inspiration trove. I am currently on Book #35. Little by little I have been scanning them and sharing pages.
I have a deep belief that you can reduce anything down to a venn diagram. Here is a small collection and ongoing log.
